Laura's Fine Linens is a community based business situated on
a rural farm in the heart of the Mashonaland district of Zimbabwe.
This community based industry produces a range of exquisite hand
embroidered bed, table linen and home accessories guaranteed to
add style and beauty to any home.
Quality cottons
Driven by desire for purity and quality, only the finest Zimbabwean
linens are used. Zimbabwean linen has always been highly regarded.
The cotton, which has not been genetically modified, is handpicked
ensuring purity. When cotton is harvested mechanically, there
is more debris mixed in it and at the same time, the fibres are
put under stress.
The quality of the cotton depends on the length of the fibres,
known as staples. As you know, the longer the staple - the higher
quality the cotton. While the cotton staple from Zimbabwe is not
as long as Egyptian cotton, it is a whiter cotton.
The cotton is then carded. This removes short fibres and dirt.
After this process, the longest staples remain, ready for spinning
and weaving into a fine and durable fabric. The result is a fabric
which is long lasting, soft and luxurious.
What about thread count?
Thread count is important but when choosing the finest there
are other considerations, such as the quality of the cotton itself
and the feel of the fabric. The thread count is the number of
threads in a square inch of fabric. The most popular cottons will
be around 150, while good quality sheets will start at 180. The
fabric used by Laura's Fine Linens has between a 200 to 250 thread
count bringing you the luxury range.
The cotton fabric used by Laura's Fine Linens is a fabric which
is supplied throughout the world as sheeting. Leading hotels in
Europe use this cotton sheeting due to the high quality and durability.
Laura's Fine Linens use the same specification fabric so as to
offer you supreme quality. This cotton linen is also known to
last. It is not uncommon for Zimbabwean cotton to still be in
use 15 years after it was purchased.
Flawless embroidery
Each product has been embellished with hand embroidered motifs
and fine cutwork or counted thread embroidery also called whitework
embroidery.
Customers have a choice of over 50 standard
embroidery motifs to choose from. Each is designed by Laura
herself. To add fresh appeal to the products, Laura is always
introducing new designs. There is something to suit every taste
and home.
All the work is handcrafted by the local crafts women. They undertake
each piece of work with care and every effort is made to create
the perfect end product. It can take over a week for one women
to complete a queen size duvet cover. Each item is unique due
to the handcrafted motifs, as no work can ever be exactly the
same as the one before. It is with each carefully placed thread
, that the work is brought to life through the flawless embroidery.
Finally, no machine can ever capture the beauty of hand embroidery.
What is counted thread embroidery and cutwork - counted-thread
embroidery is any embroidery in which the fabric threads are counted
by the embroiderer before inserting the needle into the fabric.

Drawn Thread Work
|
Drawn thread work
Drawn thread work is a form of counted-thread embroidery based
on removing threads from the warp and/or the weft of a piece of
evenweave fabric. The remaining threads are grouped or bundled
together into a variety of patterns. It is also known as whitework
embroidery because it was traditionally done in white thread on
white fabric and is often combined with other whitework techniques.
Cutwork embroidery
Cutwork embroidery is a beautiful form of needlework where portions
of the background fabric are cut away and discarded, with the
edges worked over in buttonhole stitches.
As one can imagine, all this delicate thread work requires skill,
time and patience to complete and finally produce a work of art.
A work of art for you to treasure.
